How to Style a Curly Wig Without Frizz

MelexWorld Editorial 4 min read

To style a curly wig without frizz, define the curls while the hair is damp using a leave-in and a curl gel or cream, shape them by scrunching or finger-coiling, then keep your hands off until it dries. Frizz on curls comes from two things: dryness and disturbed clumps. Fix both with moisture, product that holds, and a hands-off finish, and the pattern behaves. Curly hair thrives on water, not brushing, and that one shift changes everything.

Why curly wigs frizz

Curly and coily textures are the driest of all, because the natural oils struggle to travel down a bending strand, and on a wig there is no scalp making oil to begin with. Add dry brushing, humidity and heat, and the cuticle roughens while the curls separate into frizz. Everything below is aimed at keeping the hair hydrated and the pattern intact.

What you need

  • A leave-in conditioner for moisture and slip
  • A curl-defining cream or gel for hold and definition
  • A wide-tooth comb and a spray bottle of water
  • A microfibre towel or cotton t-shirt for plopping
  • A light serum or oil to seal, used sparingly

Defining frizz-free curls

  1. Start damp and clean. Mist the wig until evenly damp; curls define on wet hair, never bone-dry. If it is dirty, wash it first.
  2. Detangle gently. Wide-tooth comb from the ends up while the hair is damp and full of leave-in, then put the comb down for good.
  3. Section and layer product. Rake leave-in through each section, then apply gel or curl cream over it. The leave-in hydrates, the gel holds the shape.
  4. Shape the curls. Smooth product down each section with praying hands, then scrunch upward toward the base, or finger-coil individual curls for tighter definition.
  5. Do not touch it as it dries. Handling wet curls breaks the clump and makes frizz. Plop the hair in a microfibre towel to soak up excess water, then leave it be.
  6. Air-dry on a stand, out of humidity and sun. Diffuse on low and cool only if you must rush it, because high heat frizzes curls fast.
  7. Scrunch out the crunch. Once fully dry the gel forms a cast; scrunch gently with a drop of oil on your palms to soften it into bouncy, defined curls.

Do this, not that

Do Don't
Define curls on damp hair Style or refresh bone-dry
Detangle with fingers or a wide-tooth comb Brush a curly wig, especially dry
Layer leave-in under a gel for hold Rely on oil alone, which gives no definition
Air-dry, or diffuse on cool Blast it with high heat
Sleep in a satin bonnet or pineapple Sleep on cotton and crush the curls

Refreshing between wears

You do not restyle from scratch every morning. Mist the curls with water, or a water-and-leave-in mix, scrunch, add a touch of gel to any loose sections, and let them air-dry. Store the wig on a stand in a satin bonnet, or loosely pineapple long curls on top of the head, to keep the pattern overnight. Honestly, correct storage is half the battle against frizz. Questions I get at the chair

How do I get frizz out of curls?

Re-wet the frizzy sections, add a little leave-in and gel, re-scrunch or finger-coil, and let them dry undisturbed. Frizz is dryness plus disturbed curls, and water and product reset both.

Can I ever brush a curly wig?

Only damp and loaded with conditioner, with a wide-tooth comb or your fingers from the ends up. Brushing curls dry shreds the pattern into frizz.

What actually stops the frizz?

A hydrating leave-in for moisture, a curl gel or cream for hold, and a small amount of light oil to seal once dry. Skip heavy products, which build up and weigh curls down.
