How to Measure Your Head for a Wig
Measure your head for a wig with a soft tape measure across six points, and the most important one is the full circumference around your hairline. These numbers tell you your cap size, which decides whether a unit sits flat and secure or slides, squeezes and gives you a headache. Most fit problems I see come down to guessing this instead of measuring. It takes two minutes.
Before you start
- Use a flexible fabric tape, not a rigid ruler or metal builder's tape.
- Flatten your hair as it will sit under the wig, braided down or slicked back.
- Keep the tape snug against the scalp, not tight, not loose.
- Have someone help if you can, back measurements are hard solo.
The six measurements
- Circumference (the key one). Around the entire head along your hairline: across the forehead, above the ears, around the nape, back to the start. This single number maps most closely to cap size.
- Front to nape. From the centre of your front hairline, straight over the crown, down to the nape.
- Ear to ear over the top. From the top of one ear, over the crown, to the top of the other.
- Ear to ear across the forehead. Along the front hairline from one ear to the other.
- Temple to temple around the back. From one temple, around the back of the head, to the other.
- Nape width. Across the base of your hairline at the neck.
Turning numbers into a cap size
Circumference is what most cap sizing keys off. As a general guide:
| Circumference | Typical cap size |
|---|---|
| Around 20.5 inches / 52 cm | Petite / small |
| Around 22 to 22.5 inches / 56 to 57 cm | Average / medium |
| Around 23 to 24 inches / 58 to 61 cm | Large |
The average adult falls in the medium range, which is why most wigs are made to it, but do not assume. Measure, then check the number against the specific unit, since sizing varies a little by maker.
Adjust for a closer fit
Most quality wigs have adjustable straps at the nape and often combs inside. Once you have the right base size, those straps fine-tune the fit:
- Tighten the straps if the cap feels a touch loose.
- Loosen them if it presses or gives you a tension headache.
- Use the combs and an elastic band along the perimeter for a secure, glueless hold, see securing a wig without glue.
Signs the size is wrong
- Too big: slips back, lifts at the nape, gaps at the ears, hairline sits too far forward.
- Too small: pressure headache, edges dig in, cap will not reach your natural hairline, strain on the lace.
Neither is something to push through. The right size should feel secure and forgettable within minutes.
